The Walking Fish

A team of researchers has found a remarkable parallel to one of evolution’s signature events. In a cave in Thailand, they’ve discovered that a blind fish walks the way land vertebrates do. The waterfall-climbing cave fish, Cryptotora thamicola, has even evolved many of the skeletal features that our ancestors did for walking, including a full-blown pelvis.

The early land vertebrates, known as tetrapods, evolved adaptations that enabled them to move efficiently over solid ground. A pelvis joined their hind limbs to their spines.

These adaptations led tetrapods to walk in a distinctive fashion, moving their forelegs and hind legs together in a cycle. Early tetrapods probably walked much the way salamanders do today, bending their trunk from side to side as they traveled.

Un equipo de investigadores han encontrado uno de los acontecimientos notables de la  evolución. En una cueva en Tailandia, han descubierto un pez ciego que camina como los vertebrados terrestres lo hacen. El pez escalador, Cryptotora thamicola, ha evolucionado muchas de las características del esqueleto que nuestros antepasados tuvieron que desarrolar para caminar, incluyendo una pelvis.

Los primeros vertebrados terrestres, conocidos como tetrápodos, desarrollaron adaptaciones que permitieron que se movieran eficientemente sobre una base sólida. A la  pelvis se le unieron extremidades traseras a sus espinas,

Estas adaptaciones llevaron a los tetrápodos a caminar de una manera distintiva, moviendo sus patas delanteras y las patas traseras juntas en un ciclo. Los primeros tetrápodos probablemente caminaron muy parecido a la forma en que las salamandras lo hacen hoy en día, doblando el tronco de lado a lado mientras caminaban.
