Danielle Trofe is an interior designer who makes biodegradable lamps in a studio in Brooklyn's Industry City.

For the Mush-Lume Lighting lamps, she combines agricultural waste, such as corn husks, with hemp and injects the mulch-like mixture with a fungal product called liquid mycelium. After allowing the material to grow in custom lamp-shaped molds, she heats and dries her creations to stop them from sprouting. Two years ago, she began partnering with Ecovative, an upstate New York firm that produces grow-it-yourself materials.

By harnessing innovative technologies and material sciences to create functional and accessible design, Danielle aims to encourage a departure from conventional materials and production techniques in search of long-term, sustainable solutions.
