Una colaboración de científicos de Yale y de la Sociedad de zoología de Londres, se pusieron a analizarlos y determinar la biodiversidad de aves en el mundo. Esta lista es parte de la lista de especies de la "ZSL’s Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE)" en la cual se rankearon 100 especies de aves basadas en su status y como son comparadas con otras aves. Esta lista incluye 20 de 29 órdenes conocidos, existen aproximadamente 9,993 especies vivas de aves que son conocidas por los científicos.
